Graduate student Anny Gaul receives research grants

Graduate student Anny Gaul was awarded the 2015 Cherwell Food History Studentship by the American Friends of the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery. The award included a research grant, which Anny used to travel to the libraries and book markets of Cairo in support of a research project on the emergence of the modern domestic kitchen in Egypt in the early twentieth century. She presented her preliminary findings at this year’s Symposium, giving a talk titled “Fava Beans and Bechamel: Inventing the Modern Egyptian Kitchen.”

Anny is also the recipient of a 2015-16 Pre-Dissertation Research Grant from the American Research Center in Egypt, which will support additional research in Cairo.
