Minor in Islamic Studies
The Islamic Studies minor seeks to provide students with knowledge and academic understanding of Islamic civilization, intellectual history, and cultures in the pre-modern and modern periods. The minor offers students a wide range of courses in Islamic Studies, including the Qurʾān, law, hadith, theology, philosophy, ethics, Sufism, Shi’ism, literature, linguistics, and cultural studies.
Students are required to take six courses (18 credits) to fulfill the minor in Islamic Studies. All students have to take at least one of two core courses: ARAB 2202: Introduction to Arabo-Islamic Civilizations or ARAB 3303: Topics in Arabic and Islamic Civilization. These two courses provide students with the foundational knowledge needed for the study of Islam. In addition, students will take five electives in Islamic Studies approved by the DUS for each student. One
elective may be from outside the department. There is no language requirement for the minor, and courses at the language-acquisition level do not count toward the minor.
