Pavel Pavlovitch – Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Bulgaria

Pavel Pavlovitch is professor in Medieval Islamic Civilization at the Department of Arabic and Semitic Studies, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski,” Bulgaria. He holds a BA degree in history from Baghdad University, Iraq, and MA and PhD degrees from the University of Sofia. His fields of academic interest include proto-Sunni and early Sunni ḥadīth transmission and criticism (2nd–3rd/8th–9th century), history of the Arabs in the Jāhiliyya and early Islam, transmission of knowledge in the 1st–3rd/7th–9th century; methodology of modern ḥadīth studies. His major publications include the monographs The Formation of the Islamic Understanding of Kalāla in the Second Century AH (718–816 CE).
